I am studying for an interdisciplinary MSc/PhD in the Doctoral Training Centre for Bioenergy

Background

Graduated from the University of Leeds in 2013 with an integrated Masters degree in chemistry (MChem, BSc). During my masters studies my focus was on novel electrochemical methods for synthesis of N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) compounds for use as catalysts. After graduating I started a job with a medium sized business which produced high quality consumables for the life sciences. This lasted until I started the CDT in Bioenergy in October 2014.

Research Interests

The aim of my research is to discover cost effective catalysts for upgrading of oils produced from pyrolysis of biomass and waste plastics. This will focus on metal doped zeolite type catalysts as a route to upgrade the oils for use as fuels or for synthesis of advanced chemicals. Making use of materials which are no longer fit for their primary purpose will become more vital as raw materials are used up and being able to convert these materials into a useful form is important, particularly with the shortage or absence of petrochemical products which is probable at some point in the future.

Why I chose the CDT in Bioenergy

Having studied Atmospheric Chemistry modules whilst doing my undergraduate degree at Leeds, I was interested in working in a field that could limit the impact humans have on the environment. The cross discipline nature of the course and application to industrially relevant technologies sealed the deal.
